What are Inlays and Onlays?
Dentists use inlays and onlays to treat advanced tooth decay or cavity cases. The pieces are made of high-quality dental materials like porcelain, gold., or composite resin. An inlay or onlay is bonded to the damaged area of a tooth. when more than half of the tooth’s biting surface has been damaged, Dr. Lowenguth may use an inlay or onlay.
An inlay is used on the inside of the tooth’s cusp, while onlay is used when coverage extends over the cusps to the exterior of the teeth.
How are Inlays and Onlays Applied?
The inlay or onlay procedure takes two visits to our office. At the first visit, Dr. Lowenguth prepares the tooth by either removing a previously existing filling or removing any decay. An impression of the tooth will be taken and the inlay or only will be crafted based on the exact tooth it will be used on. You will then get a temporary sealant on the tooth.
At your second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed and the tooth is prepped for bonding. Dr. Lowenguth will check the fit of the appliance and bond it to your tooth and polish it for a natural look and usability.
Important Considerations for Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and Onlays strengthen the tooth they are bonded to after it has suffered decay or damage. In contrast, traditional fillings can reduce tooth strength by up to 50%. Inlays and onlays last anywhere from 10 – 30 years and in some cases can be used as an alternative to crowns.
